“The Carbuncle Cup is an architecture prize, given annually by the magazine Building Design to "the ugliest building in the United Kingdom completed in the last 12 months". It is intended to be a humorous response to the prestigious Stirling Prize, given by the Royal Institute of British Architects to "the architects of the building which has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year".

The Carbuncle Cup award was launched in 2006, with the first winner being Drake Circus Shopping Centre in Plymouth by Chapman Taylor. A shortlist is announced by Building Design each year, based on nominations from the public, and usually timed to coincide with the Stirling prize shortlist. Public voting via the magazine's website was used to select past winners, giving the award a sense of democratic involvement. Since 2009 a small group of critics has selected the final winners.

The award was based on the Carbuncle Awards which the Scottish architecture magazine Urban Realm, formerly Prospect, had been presenting to buildings and areas in Scotland since 2001.The names of both awards are derived from a comment by Prince Charles, an outspoken critic of modern architecture, who in 1984 described Richard Rogers' proposed extension of London's National Gallery as a "monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend".”

What is the ugliest building in Britain?
This year’s Carbuncle Cup has been ‘won’ by the Tesco Extra in Woolwich, south-east London. Use GuardianWitness to nominate what you think is the ugliest building in the UK

“Oppressive, defensive, arrogant and inept”. Judges of the Carbuncle Cup, a yearly ‘prize’ awarded by the architectural website building design for the worst new building in Britain, did not mince their words when describing the new mega-Tesco in Woolwich, which, to these eyes, looks like a giant space invader crashed into the middle of the town.

Also making the shortlist was Trinity Square shopping centre in Gateshead (another Tesco), the Vauxhall Tower, by Broadway Malyan, the chancellor’s building at the University of Bath, and a block for student accomodation firm Unite in Stratford, east London.

The Carbuncle Cup only judges buildings that have been completed in the past year: for this GuardianWitness assignment, there is no completion date limit. From new-build towers to historical mistakes, we’re keen to find out what you think is the ugliest building in Britain. Please include a description alongside an image of the building in question, and we’ll put your suggestions to a vote of our readers.
