Senate passes bill to avoid shutdown, sending
proposal to House
The Senate has officially passed a stopgap government
funding bill to avoid a shutdown at midnight.
The bill, which needed 60 votes to pass, was approved
in a bipartisan vote of 65 to 35, with a handful of Republicans -- including
minority leader Mitch McConnell -- joining Democrats to advance the
legislation.
The bill now heads to the House, which is also
expected to pass the legislation later today and send it to Joe Biden’s desk.
The president will then need to sign the bill before
midnight to avoid a government shutdown. If he does so, at least one item will
be off Democrats’ legislative to-do list, but several others remain.
