Polish
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Czech PM Petr Fiala and Slovenia’s Prime
Minister Janez Janša will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his
PM Denys Shmyhal in Kyiv on Tuesday.
The leaders
will make the visit, even as invading Russian forces are close to the Ukrainian
capital and the city is under sustained shelling following the Kremlin’s lethal
invasion, which began on February 24.
The Polish
government issued a statement early Tuesday, saying that the prime ministers of
the three countries will act as representatives of the European Council, and
that the meeting was organized in consultation with European Council President
Charles Michel and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen. Jarosław
Kaczyński, leader of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party, will also be part
of the visiting delegation.
The
statement, which was published in English, added that the purpose of the visit
is to confirm “the unequivocal support of the entire European Union for the
sovereignty and independence of Ukraine,” as well as to “present a broad
package of support for the Ukraine [sic] and Ukrainians.” International organizations,
such as the U.N., were also informed of the visit, the statement said.
The EU is
set to publish the list of companies and individuals to be targeted in a fourth
raft of sanctions aimed at Russia’s business and media elites, as well as
several defense companies.
