New London mayor
Sadiq Kahn, an observant Muslim, has accused Prime Minister David
Cameron and the defeated rival in the mayoral vote Zac Goldsmith of
trying to turn different ethnic communities against each other during
the campaign to stop him from winning.
In an article in the
Sunday’s Observer, Kahn said the pair had used tactics “straight
out of the Donald Trump playbook.”
“They used fear
and innuendo to try to turn different ethnic and religious groups
against each other. Londoners deserved better and I hope it’s
something the Conservative party will never try to repeat,” he
said.
Senior Tories,
including Mohammed Amin, chair of the Conservative Muslim Forum, also
criticized their own party’s campaign as divisive and deeply
unpleasant, according to a report in the Guardian.
