The head of
Germany's public health institute says he expects the coronavirus pandemic to
claim many more lives. At a news conference, the president of the Robert Koch
Institute, Lothar Wieler, said Germany has managed to stabilize the rate of new
infections through restrictions in the past weeks. But he stressed the caseload
remains too high. Wieler said he was particularly concerned about the rate of
infections in care homes, where increasing numbers of elderly residents are
contracting the virus. And he warned that hospitals are coming under growing
strain.
