LONDON —
Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der
Leyen will speak Saturday after talks between Britain and the EU broke up
Friday without a deal.
After a
week of intensive talks in London, chief Brexit negotiators Michel Barnier and
David Frost tweeted Friday evening that they had agreed to pause negotiations
because significant differences between the two sides remain.
Barnier and
Frost tweeted the same statement simultaneously which said "the conditions
for an agreement are not met, due to significant divergences on level playing
field, governance and fisheries."
Negotiators
are under huge pressure to strike a deal because time is running out to turn
any agreement into law before the end of the transition period on December 31.
Should they be unable to reach a deal in time, the U.K. and EU would be forced
to trade on WTO terms which would see the imposition of significant tariffs.
