The
president of the United States has just now again baselessly asserted on
Twitter that “Tens of thousands of votes were illegally received after 8 P.M.
on Tuesday, Election Day, totally and easily changing the results in
Pennsylvania and certain other razor thin states.”
It is
boring writing it, you may be bored reading it, but I cannot stress enough that
this is simply not true.
Mail-in and
absentee votes that arrive after the end of polling on Election Day have been
valid, legal and counted in various states for decades.
They
include ballots arriving from military posted overseas. That is an entirely
normal part of the American democratic process.
In fact, to
be clear, all of these states, some of which are Republican, allow mail-in
ballots to arrive after 8pm on Election Day and be counted. These are their
deadlines.
