Coronavirus: European countries consider national lockdowns as virus surges

Countries across Europe are weighing nationwide lockdowns once again as infection rates hit new records.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has just  announced a four week partial lockdown meaning restaurants and bars will be forced to close from Monday until the end of November.

Five different countries in Europe reported new record daily infections -- while the continent's stock markets dropped to their lowest level since May.

The virus is spreading fastest in the Czech Republic, closely followed by Belgium. Both have infectop rates above  1,400 cases per 100 thousand people -- far outstripping hotbeds like France and Spain
