Police in
the Belarusian capital Minsk have again arrested scores of anti-government
protesters. They were taking part in yet another mass demonstration to demand
President Alexander Lukashenko step down. Lukashenko's opponents defied a
police ban to stage a massive anti-government rally on the strongman's
birthday. Opposition sources estimated some 100,000 protesters marched through
the Belarusian capital. Many of the participants carried placards mocking Lukashenko,
who turned 66 on Sunday.
