The explosive documentary NAZA won the Special Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival in September 2026, where it made history by receiving a record-breaking 25-minute standing ovation.

🎬 Synopsis & Background

Written and directed by Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor (the Oscar-winning duo behind No Other Land), the film was produced by The Guardian and JW Films. It was secretly shot over three years on rooftops in Tel Aviv.

The film utilizes digitally altered, anonymous testimonies from 24 Israeli military and intelligence personnel. It investigates the inner workings of secret, AI-powered intelligence systems used to conduct airstrikes and identify targets in Gaza.

  • The Title: NAZA is derived from the Hebrew military acronym Nezek Agavi (translated as "collateral damage"), used as shorthand to indicate the predicted number of civilian casualties in an attack.

⚖️ Ongoing Controversies

The documentary has ignited an intense geopolitical and domestic backlash:

  • Political Retaliation: Israeli Culture Minister Miki Zohar labeled the film "treason against the state" and called for the revocation of the directors' Israeli citizenship. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also sharply criticized the film.
  • IDF Official Response: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a multi-page statement rejecting the documentary, calling it a "distorted, misleading and disingenuous picture" built on "manipulative misrepresentations of reality."
  • International Support: Conversely, the film has received widespread solidarity from international human rights organizations and filmmakers.

🌍 Where to Watch

  • Theaters: Following its festival success, NAZA has rolled out theatrically across more than 50 territories, including a current U.S. theatrical run at the IFC Center in New York. It has also seen substantial box office success in Italy.
  • Streaming: After its global theatrical window closes, the documentary will be made available to stream online for free in November 2026 directly on The Guardian Website
