The reports come as Poland prepares for the final stretch of a heated presidential campaign. Front-runners Karol Nawrocki, a PiS-backed candidate, and the centrist Civic Coalition candidate, Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, lead in the polls and could meet in a second-round runoff.

In a report by Polish news website Onet, Nawrocki is accused of neglecting to provide long-term care for his 80-year-old neighbor, Mr. Jerzy Ż., after signing a 2017 life annuity agreement that granted the politician ownership of a small flat in exchange for ongoing care.

According to the report, the senior was living in a state-run care home in December of 2024, with no further involvement from Nawrocki.

In his response, Nawrocki said he had “cared for an old, ill man” and emphasized their long-standing neighborly relationship.

His campaign chief, Emilia Wierzbicki, told reporters that Nawrocki had helped the man for many years and even contributed funds to help him purchase the flat, which he promised to transfer to Nawrocki in return.

Wierzbicki alsop said that Nawrocki lost contact with Mr. Jerzy in December 2024 and had unsuccessfully tried to locate him through neighbors and acquaintances. However, Onet claims it managed to find the old man after a four-hour search.

‘If I receive a bill, I’ll pay it’

The second controversy concerns Nawrocki’s use of a guest apartment in the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, which he headed before becoming president of the

 Institute of National Remembrance.

According to the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, Nawrocki used a museum apartment rent-free for a total of over six months across multiple stays despite owning a home just five kilometers away.

In response, Nawrocki said he used the apartment only occasionally, mainly during the COVID-19 pandemic when he had to isolate.

“If I receive a bill, I’ll pay it from my own pocket. It won’t be a problem,” he said in a public statement.

The Gdańsk district prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the use of the museum apartment amid concerns over possible misuse of public resources.
