“Groupthink in any organization results in lack of challenge and poor decision making. This is why cultural change should be the focus for the Director General and the new Chairman.”

 

Mr Dowden said the BBC needed to “improve its culture to ensure that it never happens again and this means a renewed emphasis on accuracy, fairness and diversity of opinion”.

 

 

His warning came after Home Secretary Preeti Patel refused to rule out the possibility of a criminal trial following Lord Dyson’s findings.

 

She told Sky News: “If an action needs to be taken later, clearly … she will follow.”

 

With the BBC facing a mid-term review of its charter next year, Mr Dowden said the government would not be hurried to “reform knee-jerk” but would not “stand idly by”.

 

Further, he indicated that there were “fundamental questions” about the future of license fees beyond 2027 as it competes with US streaming giants such as Amazon and Netflix.

 

He suggested that the only way the BBC could justify its funding model was to provide specific British programs.

 

He said that it “needs to take steps to project British values ​​and distinctive quality programming with renewed vigor and ambition as our national champions”.
