Gwyneth
Paltrow faced intense global backlash after starring in a surreal and viral
commercial for 51 Park, an upscale real estate development in Herzliya,
Israel.
The
commercial and ensuing controversy unfolded as follows:
- The Ad's Premise: Filmed in New York, the ad
features Paltrow running through a park before getting into a car. When
her driver asks if she is heading to New York, she corrects him to
"Herzliya, Israel," promoting twin 51-story luxury high-rise
towers.
- The Backlash: Critics immediately condemned
the endorsement as tone-deaf and dystopian. Pro-Palestinian activists,
influencers, and social media users criticized Paltrow for promoting
million-dollar luxury condos and "settler colonialism" so close
to ongoing violence in the region.
- Public Outrage: The commercial sparked a
firestorm of memes and sharp criticism across platforms like TikTok and X,
with some critics dubbing her "Gwynicide" and others saying she
was "consciously uncoupled from morality".
- Support: Defenders of the actress argued
she is not responsible for geopolitics and highlighted her public
connection to Jewish heritage, including her previous support for Israeli
hostages.
