The U.S.
State Department has removed a reference to Tesla from its 2025 procurement
forecast, replacing a $400 million contract for “Armored Tesla (Production
Units)” with “Armored Electric Vehicles.” The revision, made Wednesday night, does not specify
which manufacturer will receive the contract. A State Department spokesperson
told Business Insider that no agreement has been awarded to Tesla or any other
company and that there are no plans for an official bid.
The
original contract listing was made under the Biden administration before
President Donald Trump took office. While the document did not specify a Tesla
model, the mention of armored production units suggested the Cybertruck, which
Elon Musk has described as bulletproof. The revised forecast retains the
original award date of September 30 and continues to list a separate $40
million contract for armored BMW SUVs.
Musk, now
leading the Department of Government Efficiency under Trump, has faced scrutiny
over his business interests and government contracts. At a recent press
conference, Trump stated, “If there’s a conflict, then we won’t let him get
near it.”
