A PETITION to rescind the King’s invitation to Donald Trump
to attend an unprecedented second state visit to the UK has garnered tens of
thousands of signatures in less than 24 hours.
The petition’s author said signing up would show “how
unwelcome the US president truly is”.
Keir Starmer handed Trump an invitation from the King to
come to one of his Scottish properties at a future date.
It has sparked outrage, with the Scottish Greens predicting
the event will be marked by “protests and a great deal of anger”.
The 38 Degrees petition said: “This is the same Donald Trump
that in recent weeks has buddied up with Putin, cranked up tariffs on trade and
slashed aid across the world.
“Meanwhile his best buddy Elon Musk has been sticking his
oar into UK politics and spreading lies
on social media.”
Musk (above), who has fired vitriol at Starmer on social
media over the response to far-right riots in England last summer, was absent
from the Prime Minister’s meeting with Trump on Thursday.
The petition added: “The news has only just broken and it’s
already causing a stink. No date for the visit is set yet – so if we’re going
to have any chance of stopping this happening, we need to act right now.
“A huge petition signed by hundreds of thousands of us will
show Trump, the King and the PM how unwelcome the US president truly is. It’s
the first step in stopping this terrible idea.”
The petition has seen a spike in interest since Trump met
with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the White House on Friday
evening.
Trump and his second-in-command JD Vance "bullied"
the Ukrainian leader, cutting the meeting short and sparking international
outrage.
In 2017, a separate petition looking to block Trump's state
visit to the UK garnered 1.8 million signatures and was debated in parliament.
