Germany Must Stand Unequivocally with Israel

A DER SPIEGEL Editorial by Dirk Kurbjuweit

It goes without saying that Germany now stands with Israel, even if it comes to the provision of military assistance. But the imperative of moderation must also apply: protect civilians to the degree possible.

This attack is inexcusable. It cannot be justified; it cannot be defended. At all. There isn’t anything even close to an acceptable motive for raiding villages and slaughtering civilians, for kidnapping men and women, young and old. There is only one word for it: Criminal.

The leaders of Hamas, who ordered their fighters to commit this act of terror, are criminals. They must have known perfectly well that this assault would result neither in territorial gains nor military advantage. They must have known that Israel would fight back and that men, women and children in the Gaza Strip would lose their lives as a result. Their attack on Israel was also a strike on their own people, a despicable example of abuse of power. That is how last weekend’s attack will be viewed by history.

It goes without saying that the German government now stands with Israel, including the provision of military assistance if it comes to that. The Holocaust demands no less – that horrific crime against the Jews that requires Germany to support Israel and be friends to Jews around the world in perpetuity. Beyond that, though, Israel is – despite all its problems – a member of the club of democracies and, as such, an ally. Germany must stand on the side of the victims when depravity is used as a political tool.

It is unacceptable that anti-Semitism is again taking root in the country, in part as a consequence of immigration from Arab countries.

And if we are serious about living up to our historical obligations, then we must fight the anti-Semitism that is currently flaring up in Berlin and elsewhere. Those who cheer the Hamas terrorist attack, those who take to the streets to celebrate murderers, are abusing the democratically enshrined right to demonstrate. That cannot be tolerated.

It is unacceptable that Jewish schools and retirement homes in Germany have long required police protection, that those wearing a kippa in some districts of the Berlin are in danger of being attacked and that anti-Semitism is again taking root in the country, in part as a consequence of immigration from Arab countries.
