The US
election is being closely observed abroad- including in Germany. For
decades, Berlin and Washington shared relatively warm relations - that was
until 2013 when they were shaken by revelations of American surveillance of
Chancellor Angela Merkel. But Donald Trump's time as president has deepened
divisions, and left Germany leading calls for a stronger EU, saying the days of

conservative CDU, what's at stake for German-American relations in the 2020
election.
