The Suicide of Richard Bilkszto.

The Suicide of Richard Bilkszto.

The suicide of Richard Bilkszto, a 60-year-old retired Toronto school principal, occurred on July 13, 2023. His death sparked intensive public debate across Canada regarding corporate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices, workplace bullying, and institutional accountability.

The Core Conflict (2021 DEI Training)

In the spring of 2021, Bilkszto—who was working as a contract principal for the Toronto District School Board (TDSB)—attended a mandatory, online anti-racism training session.

  • The Disagreement: The facilitator, Kike Ojo-Thompson (CEO of the KOJO Institute), asserted that Canada was a significantly more racist country than the United States. Bilkszto, a lifelong advocate for public education and liberal causes, politely challenged this claim, citing Canada's progressive tax structure and public healthcare system as evidence of different socio-political realities.
  • The Backlash: According to court filings and subsequent reports, Ojo-Thompson allegedly berated Bilkszto in front of his 200 colleagues, characterizing his disagreement as a "real-life example of resistance" in support of "white supremacy".

The Aftermath and Legal Actions

Following the incident, Bilkszto claimed that his professional reputation was destroyed and that the TDSB failed to protect him from harassment. He further alleged that the board retaliated against him by revoking a subsequent contract offer and disinviting him from a graduation ceremony.

  • The WSIB Ruling: Bilkszto filed a claim with Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). In a distinct and significant ruling, the WSIB found in his favor, explicitly describing the DEI instructor's behavior as "abusive, egregious and vexatious". He was awarded two months of lost earnings for mental stress injury.
  • The Lawsuit: In April 2023, Bilkszto launched a formal lawsuit against the TDSB for breach of contract and mental distress.

His lawyer and family stated that the severe mental trauma and ongoing alienation from the institution he served for decades heavily plagued him, ultimately leading to his suicide.

Investigations and Official Responses

The tragedy prompted widespread scrutiny of institutional training protocols:

  • The Ministry Review: Ontario's Minister of Education ordered a formal staff review into the "serious and disturbing" allegations surrounding the TDSB's handling of the situation.
  • The KOJO Institute Response: Ojo-Thompson and her team expressed condolences to the family but disputed the characterization of the event, claiming that the details had been weaponized to discredit broader anti-racism and diversity efforts.
  • The TDSB Investigation: The TDSB commissioned an independent, third-party investigation into the circumstances. The Board of Trustees received the final, privileged investigative report. Because of ongoing, related litigation, the board has not released its exact details or issued direct commentary beyond expressing ongoing condolences to Bilkszto's family
