Reform wants
to stop giving Welfare to Foreigners
Reform UK has officially proposed to ban
foreign nationals from claiming almost all forms of welfare. The policy,
unveiled by party leader Nigel Farage and Treasury spokesman Robert
Jenrick, aims to restrict state benefits exclusively to full UK citizens.
Scope of
the Proposed Ban
The ban
targets a wide range of welfare payments. Foreign nationals would lose access
to:
- Universal Credit
- Housing Benefit
- Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Child Benefit and free childcare
- Pension Credit
- Disability benefits
Stated
Goals and Claims
- Financial Savings: Reform UK claims the measure
would save approximately £21 billion annually by the fifth year.
This forms part of a broader blueprint to cut £50 billion from the overall
welfare bill.
- Policy Justification: Party leaders describe the
current setup as "immoral", arguing that British taxpayers
should not fund welfare for non-citizens and seeking to stop the UK from
acting as a "welfare state for the world".
Potential
Roadblocks and Criticisms
- EU Settled Status: The ban would include European
Union citizens who hold legally protected settled status in the UK.
- Brexit Violations: Experts and political
opponents note the move would breach the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.
Implementing it would require years of complex renegotiations with
Brussels.
- Impact on British Expats: Because the Brexit deal
guarantees reciprocal rights, critics warn the EU would likely retaliate
by stripping British expatriates living in Europe of their
equivalent benefit rights.
- Political Opposition: The Labour Party
criticized the plan for stripping support from millions of lawful,
tax-paying residents. The Conservatives dismissed it as a "cobbled
together" proposal that would plunge the UK back into Brexit battles.
Analysts also point out that most recent migrants are already subject to
"No Recourse to Public Funds" (NRPF) restrictions, meaning the
policy primarily impacts long-term, integrated residents
