‘Posh
George,’ the Convicted Fraudster in Nigel Farage’s Inner Circle
George
Swinfen Cottrell,
widely known as “Posh George,” is a convicted British fraudster,
financier, and high-stakes gambler who serves as a critical, behind-the-scenes
adviser, fundraiser, and fixer for Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform
UK.
Despite his
criminal record, Cottrell has spent over a decade embedded at the highest
levels of Farage's successive political movements, including UKIP, the Brexit
Party, and Reform UK. He is currently the focus of intense press scrutiny and
parliamentary investigations regarding undeclared financial support provided to
Farage.
1.
Aristocratic Background and Gambling Addiction
Born in
London in October 1993, Cottrell was raised in immense privilege.
- Family Ties: He belongs to an aristocratic
family; his mother is the Honourable Fiona Cottrell and his uncle is Lord
Hesketh, a former Conservative lawmaker and Brexit proponent.
- Education: He attended Malvern College,
an elite British boarding school, but was expelled in 2010 due to a severe
gambling addiction. He later described himself during the 2016 Brexit
referendum period as a "compulsive, habitual, addicted gambler"
who once famously shorted the British pound by tens of thousands of
dollars on the night of the vote.
2.
Criminal Conviction in the United States
In July
2016, just weeks after the Brexit vote, Cottrell was arrested by federal agents
at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport while traveling with Nigel Farage.
- The Charges: He faced a 21-count federal
indictment involving wire fraud, money laundering, blackmail, and
extortion. Undercover IRS agents caught him offering online money
laundering services to individuals he believed were drug traffickers.
- The Outcome: Cottrell reached a plea
agreement, pleading guilty to a single count of felony wire fraud.
He claimed he never intended to launder the money, but rather planned to
steal it from the drug dealers. He was sentenced to eight months in
federal prison, which he served before returning to the UK in 2017.
3. Role
in Nigel Farage's Political Machine
Cottrell has
been described by political insiders as Farage’s "right-hand man" and
closest confidant. His involvement spans across three political parties:
- UKIP (2016): He acted as Farage’s chief of
staff, running his private office and serving as the party's chief
fundraiser during the Brexit campaign.
- The Brexit Party (2019): Following his release from a
U.S. prison, he quietly returned to Farage's operation to spearhead
fundraising.
- Reform UK (Present): He holds no official
public-facing title within the party, but leads the political consultancy
firm Geostrategy and continues to act as a senior strategist,
campaign manager, and personal gatekeeper for Farage.
4. Recent
Funding Scandals and Investigations
Cottrell
became the center of a major political scandal following investigations by The
Sunday Times and The Times. The reports revealed extensive, hidden
financial support provided by Cottrell to Farage in the year leading up to
Farage's election to Parliament:
- Personal Security &
Logistics:
Cottrell heavily subsidized Farage's lifestyle, funding his personal
security team (consisting of elite former soldiers) and drivers.
- Social Media & Housing: Cottrell paid for the
professional social media staff who produced Farage’s online campaign
content and allowed Farage to live in a luxury property he rented near
Buckingham Palace.
- Parliamentary Standards Inquiry: Because these substantial
benefits went unregistered, the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner
launched an investigation into potential disclosure breaches. This inquiry
sits alongside another probe into a separate £5 million gift Farage
received from a crypto billionaire.
Farage and
Reform UK have denied any wrongdoing, stating that the support from Cottrell
was given in a "purely personal capacity" before Farage became an MP,
and dismissed the media scrutiny as an "establishment hit job."
