Cofnas suspended
Nathan
Cofnas has been suspended by Belgium’s Ghent University as of August 20, 2026. The
precautionary suspension follows an intense academic and media uproar
surrounding his public allegations against the late University of Cambridge
professor, Jason Arday.
The
Context of the Suspension
- The Allegations: In July 2026, Cofnas published
a Substack post accusing Arday—who in 2023 became Cambridge's youngest
Black professor—of plagiarism and misrepresenting his personal charity
achievements.
- Arday's Resignation and Death: Following a wave of public
scrutiny and media coverage, Arday denied the plagiarism claims but
acknowledged errors. He resigned from Cambridge in early August and was
tragically found dead on August 14, 2026.
- The Investigation: Ghent University launched a
preliminary disciplinary investigation into Cofnas. The university stated
that Arday's death "should prompt reflection" and emphasized its
opposition to "discrimination, hatred, and racism".
Current
Status
Cofnas, a
postdoctoral researcher, announced the suspension himself on X (formerly
Twitter), stating, "They will almost certainly fire me". He has
characterized the university's response as political retaliation. Ghent
University has declined to provide further details regarding the ongoing
disciplinary proceedings to protect personnel confidentiality.
Cofnas was
previously dismissed from a role at Cambridge University's Emmanuel College in
2024 following widespread backlash over his controversial self-described
"race realist" views
