Retired
Italian Army General and European Parliament member Roberto Vannacci poses a
major political threat to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni by leading a new
far-right party, Futuro Nazionale, which is polling at 6 to 7 percent and
drawing lawmakers away from her governing coalition.
The Rise
of Futuro Nazionale
Roberto
Vannacci gained national attention in 2023 after publishing a controversial
self-published book. He was later elected to the European Parliament
representing Matteo Salvini's League party. In early 2026, he broke away from
the League to establish his own independent organization, which formally became
the political party Futuro Nazionale in June 2026.
As described
in a video profile via YouTube, “Vannacci is a former army general, a successful
author, and an increasingly prominent politician who believes Giorgia Meloni
has adopted a more moderate stance.”
Why
Vannacci Threatens Meloni
Vannacci
attacks Meloni from the right wing of her own political base. He accuses her
government of moving toward the political center and breaking campaign promises
since taking power in 2022.
- Hardline Policies: He campaigns on strict border
enforcement, zero tolerance for crime, and programs for migrant
repatriation.
- Loss of Lawmakers: His movement has already caused
several members of parliament to defect from Meloni's coalition.
- Electoral Power: Analyst Wolfgango Piccoli notes
via The Telegraph, “He's dangerous for Meloni because
he's attacking her from inside her own political tradition.”
Meloni's
Counter-Strategy
Meloni faces
a strategic dilemma. If she ignores Vannacci, he may siphon enough votes to
block her coalition from winning future majorities. If she copies his extreme
rhetoric, she risks validating his platform. To fend off this challenge, Meloni
has responded by adopting tougher public stances on security and migration
