The National
Police files a complaint against the State
The main
union of peacekeepers, Alliance Police Nationale, filed a complaint
against the French state on October 14, 2026 for "endangering the lives of
others".
This
unprecedented judicial approach is part of the context of the strong tensions
linked to the protest movement of high school students.
Grounds
for the complaint
According to
the press releases of the National Police Alliance
union, the
organisation denounces:
- Contradictory injunctions: The union points to a gap
between the firmness publicly displayed by the Minister of the Interior, Laurent
Nuñez, and the verbal or hierarchical instructions applied on the
ground, asking the police to "slow down".
- "Sacrificed" police
officers: In
the face of urban violence, Alliance believes that these restraint orders
disarm operational police officers, leaving them "alone, betrayed and
abandoned" in the face of popular vindictiveness.
The human
toll put forward
To justify
the danger faced by officers on the ground, the government reported that 937
police officers and gendarmes had been injured since the beginning of the
high school mobilization. At the same time, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu
said that 248 students had been injured and that 36 internal investigations had
been entrusted to the IGPN to examine the behavior of certain police
officers.
Trade
union reactions
Alliance's
legal initiative is not unanimously supported by the profession. While the
majority union is seeking to officially establish hierarchical
responsibilities, other police unions have expressed their annoyance at this
procedure, described by some as an impulsive reaction or a purely political
approach.
On the legal
level, analysts stress that the action is complex, because the union will have
to provide material and direct proof of a causal link between the command
directives received and the physical damage suffered by the agents
