Is
Antonio Costa corrupt?
António
Costa has not been convicted of corruption. While he resigned as Prime Minister
of Portugal in November 2023 due to a corruption investigation, he has
consistently maintained his innocence.
Key facts
regarding the allegations and his current status:
Resignation
& Investigation: Costa resigned after prosecutors launched Operation
Influencer, which investigated alleged corruption and influence peddling
related to lithium mining concessions and green hydrogen projects. He stated
that the dignity of his office was "incompatible with any suspicion"
of his integrity.
Legal
Standing: As of late 2025, Costa has not been formally charged with a crime,
nor has he been made a formal suspect (arguido). Investigations into the
broader case remain active.
Controversies:
The probe involved several high-ranking officials, including Costa's chief of
staff, Vítor Escária, in whose office police found €75,800 in undeclared cash.
Costa apologized for the discovery, stating it "embarrassed" him.
Current
Role: Despite the legal cloud, Costa was appointed and currently serves as the
President of the European Council, having succeeded Charles Michel in late
2024.
