Katie Zacharia Is Out After 5 Days as White House Press Secretary

White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia is out of her role on Friday, October 16, 2026, after serving for just five days. Her brief tenure makes her the shortest-serving press secretary in White House history.

According to reports from The New York Times and other major outlets, Zacharia was let go following intense scrutiny over her professional background and a rocky debut in the briefing room. Before her departure, President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday morning that he had explicitly encouraged her to "reconsider" the position, stating, "Honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider". White House officials later confirmed to outlets like Fox News that she was "transitioning out" of the role.

Her swift departure follows two primary controversies that unfolded over her week in office:

  • Legal Credential Scrutiny: When Trump announced her appointment, he introduced her as "an attorney". However, investigative reporting from The Wall Street Journal revealed that Zacharia did not pass the California bar exam. In an interview, Zacharia acknowledged she had not passed the exam and lacked a license to practice law in the United States, despite regularly calling herself a lawyer in previous public appearances.
  • Bumpy Press Debut: Zacharia hosted her first and only official press briefing on Tuesday, October 13. The briefing lasted less than 15 minutes, during which she struggled to answer key policy questions and unexpectedly announced the requested resignation of U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle.

Zacharia had just assumed the position after succeeding Karoline Leavitt. The administration has not yet announced a permanent replacement
