Sandra
Felgueiras Sunrise Luis Neves
The Minister
of Home Affairs, Luís Neves, is involved in a strong controversy
following an exclusive joint investigation by TVI, CNN Portugal and the
newspaper Nascer do Sol. The case, which is being strongly followed and
commented on by investigative journalist Sandra Felgueiras, focuses on
suspicions of crime and alleged conflicts of interest dating back to the period
when Luís Neves served as National Director of the Judiciary Police (PJ).
The Heart
of the Controversy
- Conflict of interest: The investigation by the
newspaper Nascer do Sol and CNN Portugal revealed that Luís Neves, while
leading the PJ, hired for private works in his own home the same
construction company to which he had awarded public contracts of the
Judiciary Police.
- Use of seized goods: Suspicions were raised about
the operational and personal use of goods seized by the authorities. Among
the complaints, the use of a seized
sports golf vehicle that the minister was taking home (under the justification of
saving public money) stands out, as well as the lead by a court in
relation to an order of his that validated the use of equipment seized
from the trafficker "Xuxas" (such as sofas, televisions and gym
equipment).
- Investigation by the Public
Prosecutor's Office: In view of the seriousness of the facts, the Public Prosecutor's
Office opened an autonomous criminal investigation and removed
the Judiciary Police from the investigations to ensure total exemption from
the process, formally placing the minister under suspicion.
Sandra
Felgueiras' Reaction
The CNN
Portugal journalist has taken a strong stance in defense of public scrutiny and
investigative journalism in the face of the government's reactions:
- Criticism of the minister's
stance: On the
air, Sandra Felgueiras said that the minister "seems oblivious to
reality"
and showed an inability to understand the seriousness of the situation,
after Luís Neves went public to suggest that the media coverage of the
case is due to "envy" on the part of journalists.
- Rejection of pressure: The journalist categorically
refused the
minister's attempt to "confuse the journalistic plan with the
political plan", publicly guaranteeing that the team will not back
down in the face of any threats or attempts at intimidation.
- Judicial validation: Felgueiras also stressed that
the recent positions taken by the Attorney General of the Republic prove
that the Public
Prosecutor's Office has not turned a blind eye to the material facts that the
newsrooms have been exposing
