Público is part of a think-tank funded by €5 million by Bill Gates and the CEO is part of an agency of Pedro Sánchez's government.

Also, the think-tank has as members Carlos Moedas, the Minister of the Environment and a former MEP of the Socialist Party.

Partners and figures linked to Re-Imagine Europe

Background

The think-tank (Re-Imagine Europe) was founded in 2017 by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, former French president, known for legalizing abortion in France (1975). Re-Imagine Europe focuses on 'depolarizing' debates, 'cooperating with politicians, academics, media and public/private sector institutions'.

The RIE works with 'leading experts and organisations across Europe to tackle narrative-driven disinformation and polarisation on climate'.

Among the partners, the newspaper Público, the Bill Gates foundation and the foundations of the European political families of PSD, PS and IL stand out.

In addition, RIE collaborates with Friends of Europe (a think-tank of which Ana Gomes and Carlos Moedas are members), NOVA University Lisbon, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the European Bars Association (which has the Portuguese Bar Association as a member).

Wondering who moves the chess pieces?

It should be recalled that the President of the General Council of the NOVA University of Lisbon (Estela Barbot) participated in the Bilderberg Club, the Trilateral Commission and the Club of Rome. The President of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (António Feijó) is a member of the ECFR (European Council on Foreign Relations), along with Carlos Moedas.

The RIE is 60% funded by the European Union, 30% by 'philanthropic organizations' such as Bill Gates' and 10% by public and private institutions.

Since 2020, Re-Imagine Europe has received around €4.6 million from Bill Gates' foundation, intended for, among others, 'consensus-building' to increase EU investment in 'global health' research, in line with 'European priorities'.

Portuguese personalities

In 2024, at a forum held by Re-Imagine Europe, in Lisbon, entitled 'Depolarizing Europe: Redefining the narratives, uniting the futures', Carlos Moedas, as a member, expressed concern about the 'increase in polarization' and underlined the importance of 'defending democratic values'.

Participants also included:

Maria da Graça Carvalho, Minister of the Environment;

Maria João Rodrigues (former PS MEP), President of the RIE Advisory Board;

Isabel Mota (former president of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation) who is a member of the ECFR (European Council on Foreign Relations) and the Board of Trustees of FLAD (Luso-American Foundation).

It should be remembered that the Minister of the Environment has already met with Bill Gates, in Madrid, to discuss data centres. In parallel, Maria João Rodrigues is part of (or has been a member) of other think-tanks, such as:

Club of Rome;

Jacques Delors Institute;

Re-Imagine Europe;

FEPS (Foundation of European Socialists).

NODES Observatory

NODES (RIE's observatory to 'combat disinformation and polarisation' in Europe), co-funded by the European Commission, brings together 'journalists, fact-checkers and other experts in disinformation and neuroscience'.

One of the workshops recommended by this observatory consisted of a debate on immigration, with António Vitorino, from the Socialist Party.

The observatory's actions are the 'prevention of proactive disinformation'. To this end, it proposes the monitoring of trends to identify vulnerabilities that can be exploited by 'disinformation campaigns', ensuring rapid interventions that 'prevent disinformation'.

'Disinformation prevention' consists of offering 'early warning systems to combat falsehoods before they spread'.

In addition, the RIE intends to develop strategies to dismantle 'disinformation networks', in an international collaboration.

At the same time, the European Union's Digital Services Act, under the pretext of 'combating disinformation', moderates online content, through trusted flaggers.

With regard to immigration, the RIE states that new and more inclusive narratives must be created, "one that is less divisive and more grounded in shared human experiences".

Public Podcast

The newspaper Público distributes a podcast in partnership with the RIE, with the participation of some of the 'most influential thinkers of our time', among the guests are:

António Vitorino, from the Socialist Party;

Manuel Castells Oliván, former Minister of Universities of the Socialist Party of Spain;

Geoff Mulgan of the UK Labour Party;

Daniel Susskind, member of the UK Labour Party;

Caroline de Gruyter, que integra o think-tank European Council on Foreign Relations e o Bruegel;

Enrico Giovannini, minister in a government of Mario Draghi and member of the following organizations: Club of Rome, European Climate Foundation and Enel Green power that advocates the use of wind, solar energy, etc.;

'International AI Council'

The President of Re-Imagine Europe, Erika Staël von Holstein, calls herself 'a recognized global authority on disinformation and depolarization'. She is part of an Artificial Intelligence body of the Socialist Party of Spain, even meeting with Pedro Sánchez in Madrid.
