In the most
recent Saxony-Anhalt state election on September 6, 2026, the
far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party won a decisive victory
according to exit polls, taking a commanding lead with around 44% of the
vote.
This
historic result gives the party the "lion's share" of the votes,
easily eclipsing the incumbent center-right CDU led by Chancellor
Friedrich Merz, which suffered its worst result in the state since German
reunification at 18.5%.

⚠️ The Path to Governing
Despite the
landmark victory led by regional candidate Ulrich Siegmund, it remains
uncertain whether the AfD will actually be able to form a government:
- Short of absolute majority: The AfD's projected 39 seats
put them three seats short of the absolute majority required to
govern entirely on their own.
- The political
"firewall": All other mainstream German political parties have firmly vowed to
maintain their political firewall, refusing to enter a coalition or work with
the AfD. If the minor parties block the AfD, the CDU may attempt to cobble
together a highly complex, fragile multi-party coalition to rule instead.
🏛️ Previous Election Milestones
Prior to
this state election, the AfD also achieved substantial gains at the federal and
European levels:
- 2025 Federal Election: The AfD solidified its national
standing by winning 152 seats in the German Bundestag, trailing
only the CDU/CSU alliance (208 seats).
- 2024 European Parliament
Election: The
AfD secured 15 seats (15.9% of the vote share) in Germany's
European delegation
