Hundreds
of protesters marched through Vienna demanding Austria uphold its
constitutional neutrality, reject closer military alignment with NATO and
reconsider its support for Ukraine. Protest organiser Martin Rutter said
Ukraine should not be allowed to join the European Union while its war with
Russia continues and called for reconciliation between Kyiv and Moscow.
Demonstrators carried Austrian flags and banners reading “Yes to neutrality and
peace. No to NATO” and “Accept Russia's security concerns.” The rally comes
amid continued debate over Austria's neutral status, its support for Ukraine
and the country's role in European security. Austria has maintained permanent
neutrality since 1955, while its national security strategy also calls for
solidarity with EU measures when international law and sovereignty are
violated.
