crisis-driven heat ‘sucking soils dry’ as extreme drought hits Europe
Human-induced
climate change is drastically altering how European droughts form, shifting the
primary driver from a lack of rainfall to an increasingly "thirsty"
atmosphere. A July
2026 rapid analysis by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) consortium
reveals that record-breaking heatwaves are accelerating evaporation. This
process rapidly drains reservoirs, rivers, and agricultural soils.

- Atmospheric Thirst: Climbing temperatures increase
atmospheric vapor pressure deficits. This causes the air to aggressively
suck moisture out of the ground.
- Increased Probability: Human-driven warming has made
these intense evaporative conditions 80 times more likely in
western Europe and 40 times more likely in eastern Europe.
- Current vs. Future Risks: The extreme 2026 drought
arrived two months earlier than the historic 2022 drought, manifesting at
1.4°C of global warming. If global temperatures reach the predicted 2.8°C,
the likelihood of these severe conditions will double.

- Agriculture: Farmers face some of the driest
soils on record. Europe is expected to lose approximately 9 million tonnes
of grain. France is bracing for its worst maize harvest in 50 years, while
Romanian farmers have lost over 1 million hectares of crops.
- Infrastructure and Energy: Shrinking rivers like the Rhine
and Loire have halted or restricted cargo shipping, while severely cutting
clean hydropower generation. In the Netherlands, water shortages have been
officially declared.
- Wildfires: A relatively wet spring
followed by sudden, intense heat created a "powder keg" effect.
More vegetation grew early on, which then dried out and fueled destructive
wildfires across Spain and southwestern France.
- Public Health and Economy: The accompanying June heatwaves
resulted in an estimated 20,000 heat-related deaths across Europe. In the
UK alone, lost working hours due to extreme heat cost the economy over £1
billion.
Emergency
measures, including domestic hosepipe bans and agricultural water restrictions,
have been deployed across multiple nations. Climate scientists stress that
without rapid, aggressive cuts to global greenhouse emissions, these scorching,
soil-depleting summers will become Europe's structural norm
