Berlin police have confirmed that a suspected perpetrator behind the devastating car-ramming at the Berlin Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride festival has been identified as an individual known to authorities to be associated with the city's "Islamist scene".

The incident took place late Saturday night near the central Tiergarten park and the Brandenburg Gate, where a white van plowed into a crowd of festival attendees at high speed. Organizers were forced to immediately call off the remaining celebrations and evacuation orders were issued to the hundreds of thousands of people gathered.

Key developments following the attack include:

  • Casualties: The attack resulted in one death (a woman at the scene) and at least 16 injuries, with three victims sustaining life-threatening injuries.
  • The Investigation & Manhunt: A city-wide manhunt is underway involving more than 2,200 police personnel deployed across the German capital. The suspect has not yet been arrested.
  • Police Action: Early Sunday, police conducted several operations including an apartment raid in the Berlin district of Schöneberg, though no arrests were made as the property was empty.
  • Weapon Reports: Initial eyewitness statements and local reports indicate that after the vehicle crashed into a tree, the driver may have additionally targeted people with a bladed weapon before fleeing the scene on foot.

While the suspect's background with radical Islamic circles has been established, Berlin police spokesperson Florian Nath stated that specific motives or the exact progression of the attack are still being meticulously pieced together
