What
happened to Barbara Butch?
French
Jewish DJ and activist Barbara Butch was forced off the stage by
pro-Palestinian and far-left activists during her performance at the Cabaret
Frappé festival in Grenoble, France.
The
disruption was the culmination of a months-long boycott campaign spearheaded by
local members of the far-left French political party La France Insoumise
(LFI). Protesters targeted Butch because she signed a petition supporting
the "Loi Yadan," a controversial proposed bill aimed at expanding the
legal definition of antisemitism. Activists also criticized her for past
performances, including a set at the French embassy in Tel Aviv.
Key
Events of the Disruption
- Abrupt Interruption: Roughly 20 minutes into her DJ
set, around 150 protesters disrupted the event.
- Projectiles and Insults: The crowd whistled, shouted
insults, gestured aggressively, and threw glass bottles that shattered
near her console.
- Sabotage and Evacuation: Local authorities noted
evidence of physical sabotage to the event's electrical equipment, forcing
organizers to cut the set short and escort Butch off the stage for her own
safety.
Legal and
Community Aftermath
- Criminal Complaints: Butch and her attorney filed
criminal complaints in Paris and Grenoble alleging public incitement to
hatred, aggravated assault, cyberharassment, and obstruction of artistic
freedom. The lawsuits target LFI, specific elected officials, and
right-wing figures who amplified the harassment.
- Official Investigation: Grenoble prosecutors opened an
official investigation into the incident under the charge of
"concerted obstruction of freedoms".
- Industry Solidarity: Notable musical peers, such as
Bob Sinclar, publicly condemned the attack,
reiterating that the clubbing community should remain a safe harbor free
from discrimination and antisemitism.
Butch
previously made international headlines during the 2024 Paris
Olympics Opening Ceremony, where she faced a separate wave of
cyberharassment from right-wing groups that resulted in the convictions of four
men in late 2025. Following this latest incident, Butch remains defiant,
stating that she refuses to be intimidated and fully intends to return to the
stage
