Elon Musk says he got ‘carried away’ with Trump – but still holds on to contentious political views

Elon Musk has admitted he "got carried away" during his heavy involvement in Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and subsequent administration. In an interview with The Economist, the billionaire acknowledged that his intense focus on politics—including backing Trump with $200 million and leading the short-lived Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—distracted from running his companies like Tesla and SpaceX.

Looking back at his political involvement, Musk said, “I got carried away, frankly.”

according to reports from the Times of India.

The Shift in Focus and Lingering Views

Despite stepping back from Trump's orbit following a highly publicized falling out over a federal spending bill, Musk continues to voice highly contentious geopolitical and societal positions.

  • Regret Over Political Distraction: Musk stated he should have spent more time overseeing Tesla and his core tech enterprises. His time leading DOGE ended after deep disagreements emerged over federal cost-cutting initiatives.
  • Continued Right-Wing and Techno-Libertarian Views: While expressing regret over his direct involvement in Washington, Musk maintains several sharp, controversial perspectives. He remains highly critical of Western immigration policies and retains staunchly contrarian views on culture and gender politics.
  • Bleak Global Predictions: In the same interview, Musk doubled down on several dramatic predictions, including his belief that the United Kingdom faces an impending risk of major civil unrest in the coming decades.
  • Skeptical International Stance: Musk continues to distance himself from mainstream consensus, previously advocating for the United States to withdraw from major international bodies like NATO and the United Nations.

Backstory of the Fall-Out

The shift follows a turbulent period where Musk and Trump publicly turned on each other. After Musk labeled Trump's core tax and spending legislation a "disgusting abomination," Trump threatened to terminate billions in federal contracts for SpaceX and Tesla, accelerating Musk's decision to distance himself from electoral politics
