How did the AFD reacted against the Islamic attack in Pride Berlin?

Following the July 2026 Islamist terror attack at the Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride event in Berlin, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party reacted by fiercely criticizing the federal government's security and migration policies. Despite historically having little sympathy for LGBTQ+ causes, the party used the tragedy to advance its anti-immigration agenda ahead of upcoming state elections.

Key official reactions from AfD members include:

  • Tino Chrupalla (AfD Co-Leader): Stated on social media that Germany "will not allow religious extremists to divide our country with violence and intolerance".
  • Martin Hess (AfD Lawmaker): Denounced the incident as "a complete failure of the government's security policies" and reiterated that the AfD has long warned that Islamism remains the country's greatest security threat.
  • Thorsten Weiss (AfD Lawmaker): Asserted that Berlin has a severe problem with "Islamist extremism". He demanded an emergency committee meeting to investigate how the 21-year-old suspect, who was a known radicalized extremist with a prior conviction, was able to execute the attack.

Political analysts and Berlin's LGBTQ+ organizers have noted that the AfD's rapid response aims to leverage public security fears to build political momentum for the regional elections.
