The PSP promised this Monday, October 19, to "exhaust as much as possible the path of dialogue" with the promoters of the protests for the right to housing in Lisbon and Porto, but warned that there will be a police intervention if the tents are not dismantled.

"There is a limit. If it is not possible through dialogue and negotiation, there will have to be an intervention by the PSP," Public Security Police spokesman Sérgio Soares told Lusa, adding that protesters in Lisbon and Porto are committing a "series of irregularities".

According to the PSP, at stake is an "illegal camp", since the protesters do not have any license from the municipalities to set up the tents in Rossio and Praça D. Joao I; the fact that the law does not allow demonstrations and occupation of public space after midnight and disrespect for the noise law.

The PSP spokesman stressed that the police are "at all costs" trying to make the demonstrators understand that they can demonstrate, but "there are irregularities that have to stop".

"The tents cannot be maintained ad aeternum", he said, adding that the PSP will "exhaust the path of mediation", but there will be a time when, if they do not succeed through dialogue, the police will have to intervene.

The PSP spokesman does not know when this intervention will be made, which according to the official will be "proportionate and appropriate", noting that a permanent "risk assessment" is being carried out.

In Porto, dozens of tents have been set up since Saturday in Praça D. João I as part of the protest for the right to housing that began on the 10th, and a police charge took place in the early hours of Thursday.

Also in Lisbon, dozens of tents have been in Rossio since Saturday.
