Report on aiding illegal immigration: 'A legal vacuum was created here that the Government tried to compensate for'

Journalist Ana Leal and lawyer Pedro Proença were on the NOW channel to analyze the revelations of the investigation broadcast on the program 'Repórter Sábado' about schemes for fraudulently obtaining fast-track work visas in Portugal. Ana Leal explained how criminal networks bribe small and medium-sized enterprises to draw up fictitious contracts and subsequently terminate them within the 30-day trial period, circumventing AIMA controls. Pedro Proença highlighted that the extinction of SEF (Immigration and Borders Service) and the absence of on-the-ground oversight have created serious vulnerabilities in the system. According to the lawyer, 'the architecture of this system is wrong' by overburdening associations and confederations with verification responsibilities for which they lack the technical or operational capacity. The debate also highlighted the lack of data cross-referencing between Social Security and AIMA and the lack of 'migration compliance' mechanisms in Portugal.
