Key Changes to Asylum and Residence Permits

• End of Permanent Permits: The Netherlands has completely eliminated new permanent (indefinite) asylum residence permits. From 12 June 2026, the following will change: You cannot apply for a permanent asylum residence permit anymore. Existing permanent permits remain valid.
• Shorter Permit Validity: Temporary asylum residence permits are now valid for 3 years instead of the previous 5 years. Holders must renew their cards every 3 years.
• Renewal vs. Reassessment: Routine card renewal does not mean a full status reassessment. The IND only carries out a reassessment if there is a clear reason, for example because your country of origin has become safe.

Family Reunification and Work Rules

• Family Reunification Delays: Applications for family reunification that have already been submitted will be put on hold while the IND reviews and implements the updated strict criteria under the new dual-status system.
• Employment Restrictions: Rules managed via the Netherlands Labour Authority and Business.gov.nl dictate that certain asylum applicants—such as those from safe countries of origin—are no longer permitted to work
