Why Le Pen is keeping Trump at a distance?

Why Le Pen is keeping Trump at a distance?

Marine Le Pen is actively keeping U.S. President Donald Trump at a distance to protect her 2027 French presidential campaign from toxic American foreign policy, shield her protectionist economic message from U.S. tariffs, and maintain her party's "respectable" mainstream image.

Her party, the National Rally (RN), has explicitly rejected Trump's political backing and offers of campaign support.

Key Reasons for the Distance

  • Widespread French Unpopularity: Over 81% of French voters view Trump as dangerous. Getting too close to the MAGA ecosystem is a massive liability that threatens Le Pen's strategy to broaden her appeal to center-right, Jewish, and moderate voters.
  • Opposition to Trump's Foreign Wars: Le Pen and her protégé Jordan Bardella have aggressively condemned Trump's military actions, explicitly calling his war in the Persian Gulf a "disaster" and describing his foreign policy goals as "erratic".
  • Economic Defense Against Tariffs: Trump's protectionist trade threats—such as imposing sweeping tariffs on all European Union imports—directly endanger French industry and agricultural workers. Le Pen cannot align with a leader whose policies would harm her core, working-class base.
  • Insults to European Allies: Le Pen publicly slammed Trump for being "very insulting" during his diplomatic clashes with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, choosing to side with European national pride over transatlantic populist solidarity.
  • Purging Far-Right Extremism: The RN is hyper-sensitive to being linked with American hard-right scandals. Bardella famously canceled a CPAC speech and fled home after MAGA strategist Steve Bannon appeared to make a Nazi salute, sparking a permanent rift with the Trump movement
