Four migrant workers reportedly burned alive in their car in attack in Italy

Italian police have arrested two Pakistani nationals in connection with the horrific murder of four migrant farmworkers who were burned alive inside a vehicle in southern Italy.

The attack took place on Monday, June 1, 2026, at a gas station in Amendolara, a village located in the agricultural hub of the Calabria region.

Key Details of the Incident

  • The Attack: Security cameras at the petrol station captured the suspects blocking the vehicle’s doors from the outside, dousing the interior with fuel, and tossing a lighter inside to ignite the blaze before fleeing the scene.
  • The Victims: Firefighters discovered four charred bodies inside the minivan. Early reports identify the deceased as three Afghan nationals and one Pakistani national, all of whom worked as fruit pickers in the local strawberry fields.
  • The Survivor: A fifth passenger, an Afghan national named Mohammad Taj Alamyar, managed to survive the attack by breaking through the vehicle's trunk or windows to escape. He is currently providing eyewitness testimony to the police.
  • The Arrests: Following a review of the CCTV footage, law enforcement tracking led to the capture of two suspects in the nearby town of Villapiana. Local prosecutor Alessandro D'Alessio confirmed they face charges of aggravated multiple homicide.

Motive and Broader Context

Statements from the lone survivor and local media investigations indicate that the crime is linked to the "caporalato" system—an illegal network of aggressive agricultural gangmasters who heavily exploit vulnerable migrant laborers.

The survivor reported that the suspects acted as their gangmasters, forcing them to work under slave-like conditions without paying their wages, and providing only housing and food. The deadly dispute reportedly erupted at the gas station when the workers refused a demand to pay extra money for their daily transport.

Local authorities noted that this area has seen 14 separate arson attacks involving vehicles transport farmworkers over recent months, highlighting escalating tensions and violence linked to criminal labor trafficking networks
