PARIS —
French far-right pundit and presidential hopeful Eric Zemmour is suing French
gossip magazine Closer over its Friday cover story alleging Sarah Knafo, his de
facto campaign director, is pregnant with his child.
“Whatever
happens, always and everywhere, I will strongly, fiercely defend the privacy of
myself and people close to me,” Zemmour tweeted on Friday morning. “Yes to
public life. No to voyeurism. Sorry for perverts.”
Olivier
Pardo, Zemmour’s lawyer, announced his client was suing.
“I’m going
to hit them in the pocket, because that’s where it hurts,” Pardo said on BFMTV.
“I’m going to sue them for damages and I’m going to win because it’s an obvious
infringement of privacy.”
In
September, the French glossy magazine Paris Match published a photo of Zemmour
bathing with and hugging Knafo. However, the two never officially confirmed
they were in a relationship. Zemmour, who is married, is trying to appeal to
the traditionalist Catholic electorate ahead of April’s vote.
Zemmour had
similarly sued Paris Match for infringement to his private life.
Zemmour’s
lawyers on Thursday reportedly tried and failed to prevent the issue of Closer
from publishing the next day, according to weekly magazine Le Point, saying it
was infringing on his and his advisor’s private life.
In 2014,
the same gossip magazine revealed former President François Hollande’s
relationship with actress Julie Gayet.
