A US judge denied the bail request of the controversial social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate on Wednesday, ordering the brothers to remain behind bars as they fight extradition to the United Kingdom.

 

The Tate brothers, prominent figures in the so-called “manosphere”, were arrested in Miami on 18 July after British prosecutors filed new charges against them and sought their extradition to the UK. Those charges included criminal charges of rape and sex trafficking. British prosecutors previously charged the brothers with rape, human trafficking and sexual assault. The Tates, who are dual British-US citizens, have repeatedly denied the accusations against them.

 

The brothers have been held at the federal detention center in Miami since their arrest while they contest their extradition.

 

In a 30-page order issued on Wednesday, US magistrate judge Lauren Louis wrote that the brothers “failed to meet their burden to demonstrate that they do not present a risk of flight or danger to the community, or that special circumstances warrant their release”.

 

“Respondents have failed to demonstrate that special circumstances here warrant relief, whether their proposed special circumstances are considered singly or together,” Louis said.

 

Louis also said the brothers “possess an exceptional capacity to flee the jurisdiction”.

 

A lawyer for the brothers, Joesph McBride, criticized the ruling. “Detention first. Evidence later, maybe,” he wrote in a statement on X. “Andrew and Tristan Tate have been in federal detention since July 18 on a foreign accusation the United Kingdom has not yet been required to support with a single piece of evidence.”

 

“Every burden in that courtroom falls on Andrew and Tristan,” he continued. “None of it falls on the government that wants Andrew and Tristan handed over. Two American citizens, on American soil, ordered to prove a negative against a case that does not yet exist on paper.”

 

“September 16 is coming,” he said. “God bless.”

 

Per court documents, the UK government has until 16 September to provide information supporting its extradition request and the allegations against the brothers.
