The extraordinary regularization scheme launched by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has actually received nearly 1.2 million applications.

Scheme Overview

The landmark initiative concluded its application window on June 30, 2026. It has positioned Spain as a significant outlier amid broader European crackdowns on irregular immigration.

  • Initial Projections: The Socialist-led coalition government originally anticipated roughly 500,000 applications.
  • Final Application Volume: By the close of the registration period, official figures confirmed that 1,174,978 undocumented migrants and asylum seekers had applied for legal status.
  • Demographic Breakdown: Official data indicates that 67% of applicants originate from Latin America (with Colombians representing 25.9% and Venezuelans 11.8%), followed by African nationalities at nearly 23% (led by Moroccans at 13.3%).

Key Requirements & Status

To qualify for the temporary one-year residence and work permits, applicants had to prove continuous residence in Spain for at least five months prior to December 31, 2025, and maintain a clean criminal record.

Spanish immigration authorities have three months from the submission date to process each file and issue final approvals. While hundreds of thousands of applicants have already received provisional work authorizations, the final tally of successfully processed files is still being determined
