L'Arc de Trump: Commission unveils plans for 250-foot arch

The Trump administration unveiled new architectural renderings on Friday, April 10, 2026, for a proposed 250-foot "Triumphal Arch" in Washington, D.C.. Dubbed the "Independence Arch" (and informally nicknamed "L'Arc de Trump"), the monument is intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Key Design Features

Scale: At 250 feet (76 meters) tall, it would more than double the height of the Lincoln Memorial (99 feet) and significantly exceed the Arc de Triomphe in Paris (164 feet).

Ornamentation: The structure features a winged golden Lady Liberty statue on top, flanked by two golden eagles.

Base Elements: The design includes four golden lion statues at its corners.

Inscriptions: The words "One Nation Under God" are prominently inscribed in gold across the top.

Amenities: The latest plans include a viewing deck for visitors.

Location and Impact

Site: The arch is planned for Memorial Circle, a traffic roundabout on Columbia Island.

Geography: It would sit at the Virginia-side foot of the Arlington Memorial Bridge, placing it directly between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

Concerns: Critics and veterans' groups have raised objections, including:

Historic Sightlines: Obstructing the visual axis between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

Airspace Safety: Proximity to the flight paths for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Current Status and Hurdles

Review Process: The plans were filed with the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), a panel now largely composed of Trump appointees. A formal review is scheduled for April 16, 2026.

Legal Challenges: The project faces multiple lawsuits, including one from the advocacy group Public Citizen and a coalition of Vietnam War veterans, who argue the administration lacks the congressional authority to build the monument.

Funding: President Trump has stated the project would be "fully financed," partly through leftover private donations from his White House ballroom project.
