Spanish conservatives revive regional pacts with far-right Vox party

Spain's mainstream conservative People's Party (PP) has officially revived its regional governing alliances with the far-right Vox party, marking a significant shift in the country's right-wing political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election.

This renewal follows a major rupture in 2024, when Vox abruptly pulled out of five regional governments to protest the PP's decision to accept the distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors.

Key Developments in the Alliance

The Extremadura Deal: On April 22, 2026, the PP's María Guardiola was re-elected as head of the Extremadura regional government with Vox's support. As part of the 23-page coalition agreement, Vox leader Óscar Fernández will serve as vice-president, and the party will control the Agriculture and Family ministries.

Ongoing Negotiations: Similar coalition talks are currently underway in the regions of Aragón and Castilla y León, where both parties are seeking to solidify their joint governance.

Shifting Policy Priorities: The new pacts emphasize a "national priority" approach, which aims to favor Spanish citizens for social benefits and subsidized housing. The agreements also include pledges to tighten immigration rules and oppose certain renewable energy projects on agricultural land.

Political Impact and Reactions

National Implications: Analysts view these regional deals as a "bellwether" for the next general election. The People's Party (PP) leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has framed the alliance as a democratic necessity to oust the current Socialist-led government, while critics warn it could normalize far-right policies.

Government Criticism: Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has condemned the deal in Extremadura as "a kick to the constitution," arguing that it introduces discriminatory principles into public service delivery.

Reports from outlets like Reuters and The Local Spain suggest that while the PP currently leads in most national polls, they will likely remain dependent on Vox to form a governing majority at the national level.
