Does the
new Visegrad alliance proposed by Mayar will turn against the EU?
Péter
Magyar’s proposed revival of the Visegrad Four (V4)—potentially expanded to
include countries like Austria, Croatia, and Slovenia—aims to strengthen
Central European influence within the EU, not necessarily to leave it, but
rather to oppose "crazy" EU policies. This bloc seeks to challenge
Brussels on issues such as migration, the Green Deal, and centralizing
tendencies, potentially causing friction.
Key
Aspects of the Potential New Alliance:
Ideology
and Strategy: The proposal aims to revive the V4 as a counterweight to
federalist EU ideas, advocating for national sovereignty.
Structure:
It attempts to merge the traditional V4 (Poland, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia)
with the Slavkov format (Austria, Czechia, Slovakia) and reach toward Croatia
and Slovenia.
EU
Stance: While often characterized as Eurosceptic, this alliance is generally
pro-EU membership but opposes the current direction of EU policies, aiming to
fight "double standards" rather than destroy the Union.
Why it
May Not "Turn Against" the EU:
Internal
Divisions: The V4 has been deeply split over relations with Russia,
particularly between Hungary/Slovakia and Poland/Czechia, making a unified
anti-EU stance difficult.
Economic
Dependency: All member states are heavily integrated into the EU single market
and rely on EU funding, limiting the appetite for a direct confrontation that
could lead to an exit.
Challenges
to the Proposal:
Political
Divergence: The region’s political landscape is diverse, ranging from
nationalist-populist governments to more liberal, pro-EU leadership, making a
coherent, unified approach difficult.
Geopolitical
Shifts: The war in Ukraine has created divergent foreign policy priorities that
hinder the solidarity necessary for a strong regional bloc.
It is
more accurate to view this proposed alliance as a potential source of
disruption, obstruction, and a stronger voice for national sovereignty within
the EU, rather than a bloc actively seeking to leave the EU
