A massive fire tore through an informal migrant camp in the Tarajal industrial area of Ceuta on the night of September 10–11, 2026, destroying between 40 and 42 makeshift shelters. Fortunately, emergency services quickly evacuated the area, and no injuries or casualties were reported.

Key Details of the Incident

• The Blaze: The fire broke out around midnight on Thursday and took firefighters nearly two hours to bring under control.
• The Destruction: The flames quickly swallowed the shacks, which were highly flammable due to being constructed out of wooden pallets, cardboard, tarps, and blankets.
• The Displaced: Roughly 200 people, including families and young children, were living in that specific section of the camp. Many had been sleeping there for over a month following the mass border crossings from Morocco in late July.
• Current Status: Despite difficult conditions and a lack of alternative accommodation, several groups of migrants returned to the remains of the camp just hours after the fire was extinguished.

The Investigation & Underlying Tensions

Local authorities and police are actively investigating the cause of the fire. While initial police assessments suggested the fire might have been an accident caused by a candle, cigarette, or small cooking campfire, investigators are also looking into whether the blaze was deliberately set.

The incident follows a period of extreme strain and civil unrest in the Spanish enclave:

• Border Pressure: Local officials reported that tens of thousands of migrants attempted to cross into Ceuta in late July, leaving thousands remaining in the 20-square-kilometer city.
• Prior Attacks: Just days before the fire on September 8, a reported attack by masked individuals occurred at the exact same Tarajal site, during which a 6-year-old boy sleeping in a tent was seriously injured by a pellet gun.
• Local Friction: In late August, groups of local residents clashed with migrants, dismantling makeshift beach camps and setting some belongings on fire amid frustrations over overwhelmed municipal resources.
