The
Majority of Britons Reject Sharia Law and Sharia Courts in the UK
A new
YouGov poll commissioned by the Women’s Policy Centre shows overwhelming public
opposition to parallel legal systems that undermine women’s rights
A
landmark survey conducted by YouGov for the Women’s Policy Centre has revealed
that the vast majority of Britons oppose Sharia courts and reject any
suggestion that UK law should be replaced by Sharia law.
59% of UK
adults say Sharia courts should be banned outright, with only 16% saying they
should be allowed.
An
overwhelming 84% oppose replacing UK law with Sharia law, with just 4%
supporting such a change.
When
asked about women’s rights, two-thirds of the public (66%) believe Sharia law
does not respect women’s rights, while only 3% believe that it does.
The
findings underline a deep concern among the British public that Sharia law is
incompatible with the UK’s legal traditions, democratic values, and commitment
to women’s equality.
These
results are a wake-up call for policymakers. Britons are clear: there must be
one law for all, rooted in equality and fairness. Sharia councils and parallel
legal systems undermine women’s rights and erode the principle of equal justice
under law. The government must act urgently to protect vulnerable women and
safeguard the integrity of our legal system.
The data
is clear: Sharia in Britain is no longer a fringe question. It is quietly
binding women to discriminatory authority structures and eroding our
constitutional equality. At the same time, Islamist violence reminds us that
radical religious ideology is not fictional. We must act now, decisively, to
safeguard women’s dignity, children’s rights, and the rule of law.
