M&S Calls For Crackdown On Retail Crime After Clapham Mob Rampage

Following a series of violent "mob rampages" in Clapham, South London, in late March and early April 2026, Marks & Spencer (M&S) has issued a sharp demand for a government and police crackdown on escalating retail crime.

The Incident: "TikTok Mob" in Clapham

The Rampage: In late March and early April 2026, hundreds of teenagers converged on Clapham High Street for pre-arranged "link-ups" coordinated via TikTok and Snapchat.

Store Impact: Large groups swarmed the M&S Foodhall, ransacking shelves, throwing food, and intimidating staff and customers.

Safety Measures: Security staff were forced to lock customers inside the store for their safety until police could escort them out "one by one".

Police Response: The Metropolitan Police deployed over 100 officers, issued dispersal orders, and made multiple arrests, including several teenage girls on suspicion of shoplifting and assaulting emergency workers.

M&S Response and Demands

M&S retail director Thinus Keeve and CEO Stuart Machin have called for urgent intervention, stating that retail crime has become "more brazen, more organised and more aggressive". Their primary claims and demands include:

Criticism of Leadership: M&S officials blasted London Mayor Sadiq Khan and the government, stating they are "powerless" without a mayor who prioritises effective policing.

Staff Safety: The retailer revealed that in just one week, staff members were headbutted and one was hospitalised following an ammonia attack.

Action Plan: M&S is calling for:

Consistent Police Response: Greater use of existing tools to target repeat offenders and crime hotspots.

Ending "Immunity": Support for ending the perceived immunity for thefts under £200.

Social Media Responsibility: Urging platforms like TikTok to take down content that promotes or incites such disorder.

Mayor Sadiq Khan has since condemned the scenes as "utterly unacceptable," vowing that culprits will face the "full force of the law"
