Here’s
the latest.
An
Iranian strike at a military base in Saudi Arabia injured 12 U.S. troops, two
of them seriously, two U.S. officials said on Friday. It was one of the most
serious breaches of American defenses in the war with Iran so far.
The
attack, which involved missiles and drones, also significantly damaged at least
two American KC-135 military refueling planes, said the officials, who were not
authorized to speak publicly.
There
were attacks across the Middle East on Saturday as the war entered its fifth
week, with the Israeli military saying it had begun a new round of strikes on
Tehran and reporting more waves of missiles from Iran. It also said a missile
was fired toward Israel from Yemen on Saturday, without saying who launched it.
A day
earlier, the Iran-allied Houthi militia, which controls much of Yemen, had
threatened to open a new front in the war, saying it would intervene if more
countries joined the campaign against Iran or if the United States and Israel
used the Red Sea for their operations against Iran. The Houthis fired missiles
at Israel and attacked shipping in the region during the war in Gaza.
There has
been no sign so far of a breakthrough in the efforts to end the war, which
began on Feb. 28 when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran.
Secretary
of State Marco Rubio said on Friday that the United States did not require
ground troops to succeed in the war and that it would conclude within weeks. He
said Iran had yet to respond formally to President Trump’s peace plan. While
Mr. Trump said that talks were progressing well, Iranian officials described
recent contact as minimal and far from actual negotiations.
Mr. Trump
has extended a deadline for Iran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital
conduit for global oil and gas supplies. Iran has effectively blockaded the
waterway in retaliation for U.S. and Israeli attacks. Mr. Trump has warned that
if Iran does not reopen the strait to shipping, it will face attacks on its
power infrastructure.
Elsewhere
in the region on Saturday, the United Arab Emirates said its forces were
intercepting drones and missiles from Iran. Falling debris from an interception
injured five people in an industrial zone in Abu Dhabi. Saudi Arabia’s defense
ministry said its forces had intercepted drones and a missile, without saying
where they came from.
