The three
parties involved in forming a new minority government in the Netherlands
finalised their coalition agreement late on Tuesday evening, clearing the way
for a new cabinet to take office.
The
Liberal Democratic party D66, the Christian Democrats and the right-wing VVD
said earlier this month they had decided to put together a minority cabinet,
which will need the backing of other parties to see policy through both houses
of parliament.
“We now
want to get started on all the major issues facing us. International security,
domestic security, providing affordable homes, getting migration under control
and investing in the new economy,” D66 leader Rob Jetten, who is set to be the
next prime minister, told reporters after Tuesday’s session.
There are
just a few points to be finalised and on Friday the three parties will present
their detailed agreement to the public, Jetten said.
The plans
include “enormous investment” in defence and “in the Netherlands itself”, he
said. “We want to set out the finances carefully so that we do not pass the
debts on to future generations.”
Ministers
Work can
now also start on finding ministers and it will be up to Jetten to lead that
process. CDA leader Henri Bontebal has said he wishes to stay in parliament and
the VVD’s Dilan Yesilgöz has not said whether she is aiming to be a minister.
She was
previously justice minister under Mark Rutte and has been tipped by some
insiders to take over at defence.
February
23 was pencilled in earlier as a potential date for the new cabinet to be
formally presented to the king.
